Our Story
Our Story
The Masked Hero’s Spooktacular was inspired by my older brother, JR.
The Masked Hero’s Spooktacular was inspired by my older brother, JR.
Growing up alongside JR gave me a front-row seat to the joys, challenges, and incredible strengths that come with living life a little differently. It taught me just how powerful it is when people are welcomed exactly as they are.

In 2017, a dear friend and I, along with the help of many other incredible volunteers, started the first Upshur County Special Olympics Winter Prom. I saw firsthand how powerful an inclusive event could be. Watching individuals laugh, dance, and simply enjoy a night created just for them sparked an idea that never left me.

I wanted to create something closer to home and closer to JR's peers. I shared this dream with a few friends and family and their belief in this dream gave me the confidence to move forward. Within just a few months, The Masked Hero's Spooktacular officially became a nonprofit organization.

Once I decided to move forward with this dream, JR became the inspiration behind every decision we made. JR loves Halloween and dressing up. Halloween is also a holiday that can be difficult for individuals with special needs and different abilities. Thus, The Masked Hero’s Spooktacular is a place where those barriers begin to disappear.
